Should party leaders, as opposed to voters, nominate candidates for special elections?
In the wake of Representative George Santos’ expulsion from Congress, Governor Kathy Hochul has issued a proclamation for a special election to fill the void. Scheduled for February 13, 2024, Hochul noted that this special election is set “to ensure the voters of Long Island and Queens once again have representation in Congress.” Party leaders in Nassau County and Queens will pick the nominees without a primary.
